A visit to the House of Design in Hällefors.
The House of Design in the small town of Hällefors in rural Swedish Bergslagen is the result of the dedicated work by some driven people determined to inject new life into a dying mining and industrial town. Maybe inspired by the success of their neighboring towns Grythyttan (with one of the finest inns and restaurants in the country) and Bredsjö (with its famous sheeps milk cheese), Hällefors decided to go for art and design.
A first step was setting up a number of sculpture parks; permanent out door exhibitions with sculpures like "Universum" (The Universe) by Christopher Garney (1), "Guds Hand" (God's Hand) by Carl Milles (2), "Fröding" (Fröding) by Carl Eldh (3) and "Hon lyssnar till jorden" (She Listens to the Earth) by Eric Grate (4). A complete documentation of the sculpture parks is available via the home page of the town of Hällefors. Link at the end of this story.

The House of Design (architect Magnus Silfverhielm, AIX Arkitekter) is being finished as we write this, and will be opened on 2 December 2005. It will, among many other objects, display the extensive Torbjörn Lenskog collection of contemporary design objects, recently purchased by the foundation behind the House of Design. A small portion of the Lenskog collection was exhibited at the Swedish National Gallery in Stockholm a few years back, but the entire collection has never been displayed anywhere, as far as we know. We look forward to going back after Christmas to see it. Meanwhile, there are plenty of other interesting design objects to see in the foundation's temporary facilities in the center of town. Among others, the "41" chair by Alvar Aalto for the Paimoi Sanatorium, (1), the beautiful

folding seat by Poul Kjaerholm (2), the classic Olivetti typewriter (3), the collection of classic chairs (4) and many other fine historical design objects. Two apartments in the building now converted into the House of Design has been restored to their original 1950s standard and furnished with everything necessary to create two original time capsule exhibitions of how two Swedish homes could look in the 1959s.
